It’s Time to Build Counter-Institutions

Over the last few months I’ve been writing about some of the challenges facing the British church around issues of theological development.

We lack a defined an coherent ‘mind,’ especially in the charismatic churches. I outlined our need for institutions, our challenges with reading the Bible, and how ‘Doctors‘ will be a portion of the answer. This is developing a theme I picked up a long time ago: that we don’t build things.

If you’ve been following along, and I appreciate that most readers dip in and out, you’ll have seen those themes pop up when tackling other subjects as well.

I’ve taken some time to think some of this through more deeply and have just had published an article at Mere Orthodoxy that deals with these themes. I’d encourage you to read it if you can, would be very interested in your thoughts, and even more interested in you doing something about it!

It’s a long piece, hence why it’s published elsewhere, and wide-ranging. I pick up the political theorist Yuval Levin’s thought on mediating institutions, outline what I see as the three theological ‘problems’ facing UK charismatic churches, and suggest some solutions we can find using Levin’s categories.

It’s a very British focused piece, and even then on a segment of evangelicalism. Most of my readers don’t fit those niches but others have told me that the same analysis is true in the US and outside of the charismatic world.

Why not set aside some time, around twenty to thirty minutes, and read it carefully.
